The Story: East Gate Logo

The story behind the 'east gate' logo.

The East Gate logo was created, not only to launch the EM/College ministry, but also give the EM it's own place and identity.

Before deciding on the final design, we explored many different inspirations. First and most obvious was the church's name itself, "East Gate." How did and where did East Gate come from? From Ezekiel 10:19 ESV: [19] And the cherubim lifted up their wings and mounted up from the earth before my eyes as they went out, with the wheels beside them. And they stood at the entrance of the east gate of the house of the LORD, and the glory of the God of Israel was over them.

Wow. Pretty cool images and ideas can come with such a passage. And boy were there a lot of ideas: cherubim wings, wheels, compasses, arrows, doors, gates, angels on gates, wings on compasses, eyes, wheels making a gate, wheels making a compass, the symbol for infinity (a horizontal '8'), sun rays, light, etc.

As cool as these ideas and designs were, they didn't say anything. Either too heavy in imagery or looking a bit old fashioned the logo wasn't getting anywhere.

So back to square one. What did we want the logo to symbolize? What do we want people to associate us with?...What do we symbolize?

Well. EM. English Ministry. East Gate. Presbyterian. Church. Hmmmmmm.

Let's start with EM.

Simple, right? An 'e' and 'm'. The lowercase 'e' is not only a design decision, but also to symbolize that we should be serving others. The 'm' is actually the 'e' rotated and modified. The two letters share the same roots, beginnings, design and interlock with each other (God made us in His image, from Adam's ribs came Eve, we are forever His children and He will never let his sheep wander too far). Great! We got it! Wait. This could be anyone's 'EM'.

Okay, let's try East Gate.

Okay not a bad start, but let's keep going.

Hmmm. Not bad, getting somewhere...

...Hi. The East Gate logo. Simple, clean and modern.

But where's the symbolism? How does this logo represent East Gate's English Ministry? The lowercase font carries over from the prior designs, and the focus is again on the 'e'. Now this literally says East Gate, but no more 'm' for 'EM.' By removing 'EM' this now represents a greater community than just the english ministry. Most churches use the crucifix as a symbol/logo and we did so here too, just in a new manner.

The 't' is the crucifix and the largest element. 'east' and 'gate' meet at the 't', and without the 't' neither can exist (we can't live without Christ). The 't' also curves (the way fish hooks curve) and cradles the 'e' (we will be fishers of men, Christ is our shepherd we are His sheep). But the 'e' inside the 't' symbolizes a multitude of aspects: us accepting everyone, embracing, engaging, just to state a few.

Whew! We did it! A logo that says who we are, looks modern, simple, but speaks volumes.

But we can't get complacent and relax and become comfortable. This world is changing at a faster rate and sitting around patting ourselves on the back isn't what a fisher would do. We need to catch more, go to uncharted waters and progress. We've established ourselves now as the East Gate english ministry, but now it's time to grow and become more than we are.

With that comes the 2nd generation east gate logo.

Retaining much of the 1st generation's design, the major difference is typeface and size. The new cursive typeface now represents us as a united, continuing ministry. And at once is more formal yet relaxed. The 'e' has now grown, and while still within the 't', is expanding (representing our intent for growth) and reaching out.

The new logo symbolizes our commitment to Christ and serving His Kingdom: with a new bible study under way delving into the Heidelberg Catechisms, Community Groups through-out the week, Missionary work, new Fellowship areas, refreshed EM Office (to better serve the EM) and a new worship space just to name a few things already in the works. So get-up, let's go!

Designer Jeremy Scott took the iconic, "Enjoy Coke" slogan and added a twist. "Enjoy...God?" Unknowing of the designer's intentions as to why he chose God as his subject (maybe for his faithful followers?) it reminds us.

Do we enjoy God? For many it's an emphasis on God as a lover, judge, provider, avenger, etc the list goes on. But do we or should we enjoy God? Thoughts?

The heat is Finally on the way out, and soon cooler breezes of the Fall will be blowin in. And with a new season comes some changes to our humble little ministry.

First of all, we would like to thank our one and only God for constantly watching over us and saving us from our sins, forever freeing us, we are eternally grateful. And to all the teachers and leaders of East Gate for their dedication to the ministry and future generations of The Kingdom.

As some of you may have noticed, our main website is undergoing a change. This change is reflective of our ministry.

We used to be physically larger in numbers. Our college/young adult ministry was almost non existent, and not everyone talked to each other. We've come a llooooongg way since, that since being just one year ago, and now have the most interesting group of people God has ever brought together. We've cried, laughed, prayed, cried and laughed some more and through it all really got to become great friends.

Sometimes we ask God, why "bad" things happen in our lives. Well...because of this. Because God Always has His reason. And His reason is Always Good.

We encourage anyone who may be stumbling or on the rocks, You're not alone. He's always by your side, and your odd ball group of friends here at East Gate are more than happy to help you, pray for you, cry with you, laugh with you...

We're still spiritually young, so Let's Grow Together In Christ.
